Old Town
Heritage lots with two-hundred-year-old trees, so shade and root competition are usually the problem long before soil is. Shade-tolerant seed and a thinner, smarter feeding program do more here than more of anything.
Virgil
Bigger residential lots and newer builds on ground that was farmed until recently. Usually builder’s topsoil laid thin over the old field — sod takes beautifully once the base underneath it is right.
St. Davids
Up against the bench, where slope and run-off matter as much as what the soil is made of. Water leaves before it soaks in, so grading and rooting depth come before anything else.
Queenston
Small lots on the river side of the escarpment, mature and mixed. Levelling first, grass second, and almost always by hand rather than by machine.
Glendale
Newer subdivisions on the Highway 405 side of town. The lawns are young, which is the best time to get the soil under them right rather than fighting it in ten years.
Lakeshore Road & the Lines
Open country lots with real exposure — full sun, lake wind, and nothing to slow either one down. Seed choice and watering strategy do more work out here than anywhere else in the region.

A backyard halfway to being a lawn
A Niagara-on-the-Lake back garden partway through a sod installation. Finished turf on one side of the seam, graded and raked soil on the other, and that line crosses the whole yard inside a day.
The half you cannot see in this photograph is the half that decides everything. What happens to the soil before the first roll goes down is what separates a lawn that still looks like this in year three from one that thins out by the second August.
