Stage one — shaping
It starts as paint on the ground
Before any grass goes down, the shape gets painted out and staked. Every stake is a height. That is where the contours come from — the subtle fall that makes a putt break instead of running dead straight.
This stage decides whether your green is interesting to putt on or boring. It is also the first stage to get skipped when somebody tells you they can do it cheaper.
Stage two — the surface
Green turf is not lawn turf
It is finer, it is denser, and it is grown to be cut far shorter than anything else in your yard. It goes down over the shaped rootzone, rolled in tight, seam to seam, then taped off while it knits in.
This is the part that needs patience. A green that gets walked on in week one is a green with a scar in it.
Stage three — the good bit
And then it is just a green
Cut low, with a collar of longer grass around the outside so the edge reads properly and you have somewhere to chip from. Cups set where the contours make them worth attacking.
Front yard, back yard, or the awkward corner nobody uses — if it drains and it gets light, it can hold a green.
