Why Jordan homeowners call a turf specialist instead of a landscaper

Jordan is not like the rest of the region, and the reason is the ground it sits on. This is the Twenty Valley — bench land above the escarpment that has been growing fruit and grapes for well over a century because the soil drains fast and warms early. That is excellent for a vineyard and awkward for a lawn. Water moves through it instead of sitting in it, so turf on the bench is usually the first in Niagara to go off-colour in a dry July, and a feeding program built for St. Catharines clay is the wrong program up here.

Then there is the valley itself. Properties running down toward Twenty Mile Creek have real slope on them, and slope means water leaves before it soaks in and topsoil leaves with it. Down at the bottom, closer to the lake and the harbour, the ground goes heavier again. It is a small village with three genuinely different lawn problems inside it, and the first thing we do is work out which one you have.

The other honest thing about Jordan: the lots here are big. A quarter-acre in the village is a modest one, and out on the bench roads they get considerably larger. Sod and seed decisions that barely matter on a small city lot matter a great deal at that scale, because getting them wrong costs several times as much to put right.

What we do in Jordan

Sod installation

Premium sod laid over properly prepped and graded soil. An established lawn the day we finish, instead of waiting a season for seed to fill in. On the bench, prep is most of the job — sod laid straight onto fast-draining ground without the base underneath it corrected will look excellent in May and thin out by August.

Seeding and overseeding

Elite seed blends matched to your yard's soil and light. On a large Jordan property this is often the sensible call rather than sod, and on ground that drains this quickly the blend does more work than almost anything else we choose.

Custom fertilizer programs

Programs built on soil testing, using golf course-grade granular and liquid fertilizer, not a one-size-fits-all spray schedule. Bench soil holds nutrients differently than the clay ten minutes east of here, and the program should reflect that.

Levelling, aeration and renovation

Advanced levelling for the sloped and settled ground the valley produces, aeration and dethatching where a lawn has closed up, and full renovation when a lawn is past patching.

Jordan Village

The heritage core, with older homes, mature trees and tighter lots than anywhere else in the area. Shade and root competition are usually the problem long before soil is, and the work here is done by hand rather than by machine.

Jordan Station

North of the village toward the lake, on flatter and generally heavier ground. Mixed housing stock, mixed fill, and lawns that behave more like the rest of Niagara than like the bench does.

Jordan Harbour

Waterside lots at the mouth of Twenty Mile Creek, open to the lake with very little to slow the wind down. Full sun and real exposure, so seed choice and watering strategy do more work here than they do half a kilometre inland.

The bench and the Twenty Valley

Up above the village on the fruit-land side, in among the vineyards. Fast-draining, gravelly ground on big properties, often with slope on them. This is where soil testing before anything else pays for itself, because guessing on an acre is expensive.
