Aeration & Dethatching

Aerationand dethatching are two essential treatments for your lawn. Achieving a perfect
turf requires managing the delicate soil ecosystem which is located just below your grass.

Many common lawn issues (disease, drought, fungus etc.) can be solved by improving the health of your soil. While proper fertilizing and watering are all essential components of maintaining a healthy lawn, their effectiveness can be easily compromised without aeration and dethatching.

Lawn Aeration

Lawn Aeration, also known as coring or aerifying, is a process where a mechanical aerator removes plugs or cores of soil and turf from your lawn. The plugs are usually ½” wide x 2-3” deep

Aeration isextremely beneficial for your soil, and helps your lawn by:.

Reduction of soil compaction: Enhances drainage.

Improved water absorption: Reaches the root layer more effectively.

Promotion of new grass growth: Particularly effective when combined with overseeding.

Enhanced health of existing turf: Increases intake of fertilizers, water, sunlight, and other nutrients.

Stimulation of root growth: Improves soil structure, allowing existing roots to become thicker and grow deeper.

Dethatching

Dethatching is a treatment that also focuses on the health of your soil. Dethatching is a process that removes unhealthy “Thatch” from the top layer of your soil.

Thatch is live and dead organic matter that builds up on top of your soil. It mostly consists
of grass clippings, dead leaves, decaying pants tissue and other debris from your lawn.

A small that layer of ½” is healthy, and can help retain moisture in your soil. At ½”,
it also does not prevent water and fertilizer from reaching the soil.

Negative consequences start to emerge once the Thatch builds up past ½” and approaches 1”. Now the Thatch layer starts to prevent water and fertilizer from fully reaching the soil. It also starts to prevent air from reaching the roots and too much water can begin to concentrate. Sitting water and lack of air can quickly lead to the development of lawn diseases.

Detaching benefits for your soil and lawn by:

Removalof problematic debris buildup: Enhances the overall aesthetics.

Prevention of diseases and insects: By eliminating their thriving environment.

Improvement of airflow and drainage: Reduces the risk of water accumulation.

Increased intake of nutrients: Supports healthier grass.

Enhanced seed germination rates: Particularly beneficial when overseeding.

Timing

The optimal time for aeration and dethatching is early in the peak growing season of your turf. In the Niagara region, where 99% of lawns consist of cool-season grasses, this peak growing season occurs in early spring and late summer/early fall. During these periods, there is adequate rainfall and moderate air temperatures, providing the ideal conditions for these treatments.
