It starts with a soil test

Nitrogen makes grass green, so almost every lawn program in the country is built around it. But nitrogen is rarely what is holding a Niagara lawn back.

Most of this region sits on heavy clay. Clay holds nutrients well — sometimes too well, in the sense that they are present but not available to the plant. pH is usually the reason. Get pH wrong and you can feed a lawn all season while the roots take up very little of it, which is the most common way a homeowner ends up convinced that fertilizer does not work.

A test tells us your pH, your organic matter, and which of the major and minor nutrients are genuinely missing. Then the program is built from that, and re-tested rather than assumed. It is not glamorous and it is the single highest-return thing we do.

Weeds, and what Ontario actually allows

This is the part most companies are vague about, so here it is plainly.

Ontario restricts the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes on residential lawns. The conventional broadleaf weed killers people remember from twenty years ago are not available for lawn use here, and any company implying otherwise is either mistaken or not telling you the truth. The permitted list is short — iron-based herbicides and a handful of lower-risk products — and they behave differently from what people expect: they knock weeds back rather than erasing a lawn full of them in one pass.

Which means the real weed control in Ontario is density. A thick, properly fed lawn with deep roots leaves nothing for a weed seed to land on. Thin, hungry, compacted turf is an open invitation, and no product legally available for your lawn will out-run that. So the honest version of weed control here is a feeding program that makes the grass win, spot treatment with what is allowed, and aeration and overseeding where the lawn has thinned enough to need help closing up.

If someone has promised you a weed-free lawn in one visit, ask them what they are using.

Granular or liquid — and why we use both

They are not competing products. They do different jobs.

Granular is the base of the program. Slow-release prills sit on the soil and feed the lawn steadily over weeks, which is what builds root mass and carries turf through the parts of the season we are not standing on it. It is forgiving, it is even, and it is what most of the season's nutrition should come from.

Liquid is precision. It goes into the plant quickly, so it is what we reach for when a lawn needs correcting rather than feeding — a micronutrient the soil test flagged, iron for colour without pushing a flush of soft growth, or a mid-summer adjustment when the weather has not done what anyone expected. Liquid is also how we deliver most of the minor nutrients, because the amounts involved are too small to spread evenly any other way.

Golf course-grade product, both ways. If you would rather handle some of it yourself, we stock the same fertilizers and soil amendments we use.

New lawns need a different program

A lawn we sodded in May and a fifteen-year-old lawn are not the same customer, and feeding them the same way is a waste on one and a shortfall on the other.

New sod is rooting, not growing. It wants phosphorus and steady moisture and very little push, because forcing top growth before the roots are down produces a lawn that looks excellent for six weeks and struggles in its first real August. New seed wants gentler still, and it wants nothing that will out-compete seedlings. If we installed the lawn, the first year of the program is built around that — and if somebody else installed it, tell us when, because it changes what we do.

What a program costs

It depends on the size of the lawn, how many visits it needs, and what the soil test says has to be corrected before regular feeding is worth doing. A lawn that needs its pH brought back is a different first year than a lawn that just needs feeding.

Common questions

How many visits does my lawn need?

Usually four to six across the season, but that is an outcome of the soil test and the lawn, not a package we start from.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Granular applications want to be watered in and left alone until dry, and we tell you the window at each visit. We are working within Ontario's restrictions on cosmetic pesticide use, which rules out most of what people are actually worried about.

Can I still cut my own grass?

Yes. Most of our program customers do. Cut high — three inches or more — because mowing height does more for weed suppression and drought tolerance than most people believe. We also offer cutting and trimming if you would rather not.

When should we start?

Any time. Early spring is the natural beginning of a program year, but a lawn started in July still finishes the season better than one that was not, and autumn is the best feeding window of the whole year. We wrote up why that is, and what else a lawn needs before winter.
