What we build in Thorold
Wood fences — pressure-treated or cedar — for privacy and a finished look. Chain link for a clear boundary or a dog run that costs less and needs nothing from you afterwards. Gates to match either. And if there's a tired fence there now — and on the older streets of Thorold proper there often is — we take it down and haul it away as part of the job.
Vinyl, aluminum and pool-code enclosures aren't ours to build, and we'd rather you heard that from us on day one.

Thorold fence rules, in plain words
Here is what the bylaw says, so nothing about your quote is a surprise. The City of Thorold's fence bylaw (By-law 28-2008) sets, for a residential lot:
- Back and side yards: up to 2 metres (about 6.5 feet).
- Within 4.5 metres of the street line: a closed fence or hedge up to 0.9 metres, an open one up to 1.2 metres.
- Corner lots: inside the sight triangle, open construction only and no higher than 0.9 metres, so drivers can see.
- Pools: a separate bylaw (27-2008) — permit required, enclosure at least 1.5 metres.
Permits. The City's own fence-and-pool booklet says there is no requirement to get a permit from the City before putting up a fence, unless it's a pool enclosure. Both bylaws are linked from the City's by-laws page; if your lot is unusual, the City's building department is the one to ask, and that's a ruling only they can give.
Locates. We file the Ontario One Call request on every job, because Ontario law requires buried gas, hydro, water and telecom lines to be marked before a post hole goes in. Locators have up to five business days. It's free, and it's on us, not you.
Wood or chain link?
Depends what the fence is for. Wood gives you privacy and the finished look, and it costs more for the extra material and labour. Pressure-treated is the budget option; cedar costs more and weathers naturally. Either one wants a stain or seal every few years.
Chain link is the no-fuss boundary: dog in, line marked, lower cost in material and labour, nothing to maintain. Privacy is the one thing it doesn't do.
Price comes down to the length of the run, the material, the gates, any old fence coming out, and the ground where the posts go. We see all of it before we quote.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Thorold?
The City's own booklet says no permit is needed for an ordinary fence — only for a pool enclosure. If yours does need one, we handle it, and we book the Ontario One Call locates either way, so there's nothing for you to chase. The bylaws are on the City's by-laws page.
What if I'm on a corner?
Thorold keeps corners open. In the sight triangle, 9 metres along each street, only an open fence is allowed and it tops out at 0.9 metres, so a solid privacy fence stops short of the corner. We'll show you where when we walk it.
How high can my fence be in Thorold?
Two metres in a back or side yard on a residential lot. Near the street it drops: within 4.5 metres of the street line a closed fence is capped at 0.9 metres and an open one at 1.2. We build to the bylaw and tell you what it allows before you decide.
How much does a fence cost in Thorold?

Can you fence in my pool?
No, pool enclosures are one of the things we don't build. In Thorold they need a permit under the pool by-law, 27-2008, and a fence at least 1.5 metres high. Any other fence on the property, we'll quote.
My neighbour and I share the line. Who pays?
That's up to the two of you. Where neighbours can't agree, the Line Fences Act gives municipalities a way to settle it: fence-viewers look at the line and decide how the cost is shared. The City can explain how that works in Thorold. We'll quote the fence to either of you, or both.
