What a fall cleanup covers in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Leaves off the lawn and out of the beds, perennials and grasses cut back, gutters and downspouts emptied, and every bit of it gone on our truck the same day. That is the whole list, and it's the same list on every property, from a Queen Street lot to a rural address with a laneway you can't see the end of.
The point of doing all four together is spring. A bed left under wet leaves goes into winter as a mat, and the mat is what you'd be pulling apart in April. A gutter left full overflows onto the foundation in the first cold rain and then freezes solid. Do the lot once in the fall, and the spring cleanup is a lighter job — or, some years, not needed at all.
Why Niagara-on-the-Lake leaves are their own kind of job
Niagara-on-the-Lake has the least tree canopy of the five towns we do cleanups in — about 18% by the Region's own survey against 22% in St. Catharines — and that number hides how uneven it is. The old streets of Old Town and Queenston are the town's heritage, and the Town's own heritage conservation planning treats their trees and streetscapes as part of what it protects. Canopy varies street by street, so a cleanup here is quoted to the lot, not the postcode, and that is why we look before we price.
The other thing that makes this town different is wind. Open lots on the lake plain and along the river pile leaves into corners and against fences rather than leaving them where they fall, and a rural laneway collects whatever the fields on either side let go. That adds time, and it's part of the quote.
How the Region collects here. The Town defers to Niagara Region for leaf and yard waste: weekly pickup all year, no bag limit, paper or certified-compostable bags only, at the curb by 7 a.m. Branch bundles go on the regular truck for four weeks, 26 October to 20 November this year, tied and under 22.7 kg. There is no rake-to-the-curb collection anywhere in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Our haul-away means you skip all of it. My property is big, with a long laneway. Is that a problem?
No, it's just a bigger quote. Rural lots take longer and sometimes two visits, and the number reflects that honestly rather than a town-lot price with a surprise on the day.
Do you take the leaves away, or leave them bagged for the Region?
We take them away. Haul-away is part of every cleanup, so there are no paper bags to buy and nothing to get to the curb by 7 a.m.
Do you spray for weeds or apply anything while you're there?
A cleanup doesn't include spraying or treatments. It's leaves, beds, cut-backs, gutters and haul-away. Feeding the lawn is a separate service, the fertilizer program.
Is there a cut-off for booking?
No. We book fall cleanups all season.
What does it cost in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
