On St. Catharines clay, straight sand is a trap

This is the most useful thing on this page, so it goes first.

Sand gives the flattest, finest finish, and it is what most people picture when they think about topdressing. On a sand-based sports field or a golf green that is exactly right. Spread straight sand over the heavy clay that most of this city sits on and you can create a layer boundary that water will not cross — it moves down through the sand, hits the clay, and stops. The result is a lawn that holds water at the surface and drains worse than it did before you spent the money.

So on clay, sand belongs in a blend rather than on its own, and often the better answer is compost-led dressing that adds organic matter and slowly changes what the top few inches of soil actually are. That is the change that lasts. It is also why we look at your ground before quoting rather than turning up with a standard mix.

Topdressing and levelling are different jobs

Levelling fixes shape — real dips, ruts, settle over an old trench, the corner that holds water for two days after rain. Material goes into specific places, sometimes a lot of it, and on deeper spots it is done in stages so grass grows up through each lift instead of being buried in one go.

Topdressing improves the surface and the soil under it — a thin, even layer across the whole lawn, a quarter to half an inch, smoothing small undulations and working material into the soil profile. It is how golf greens are maintained, and it is the treatment that quietly changes your soil over a few seasons.

Most St. Catharines lawns want some of both, and booked together they cost less than booked separately because the material and the machine only come once.

The two things that make this city uneven

Settled trenches on the older streets. The North End, Facer, Merritton, Western Hill, Port Dalhousie and older Glenridge have had services dug in and backfilled over decades. Backfill settles, and it keeps settling for years, which is why so many lawns here have a long shallow trough running across them that nobody can quite explain. Filling those is staged work — fill it flush in one pass and it will be low again next year.

Slump in the newer subdivisions. Vansickle, the newer Grantham and Lakeport streets and the west-end developments were built on stripped, compacted ground with a thin skin of topsoil laid back over it. That skin settles unevenly, so the lawn develops a subtle rolling unevenness rather than distinct holes. Topdressing is the right tool for that, repeated over a couple of seasons, and it works best straight after core aeration so material works down into the holes instead of sitting on the surface.

How much material will you need?

For scale before you use it: a topdressing pass at a quarter of an inch over a thousand square feet is a little under a cubic yard. Filling an actual dip takes far more than people expect, and that surprise is the single most common reason a do-it-yourself levelling job ends up half finished.

Autumn is the right window

Nearly every lawn here is cool-season grass, doing its real growing in late summer and early autumn. That matters because dressing temporarily buries some grass, and actively growing grass pushes back up through it within a couple of weeks. The same work in high summer just sits there. It is also the best moment to overseed, and aeration, topdressing and overseeding done in that order is the backbone of most lawn renovations we do in this city.
