The Fonthill Kame: why mulch matters most here
Fonthill is built on the Fonthill Kame-Delta, a hill of sand and gravel left by the glaciers. The Region's source-protection study calls it "a horticultural island within the clay plain", with better-draining soil than the land around it. The main branch of Twelve Mile Creek starts here.
For a garden bed, fast drainage cuts both ways. Roots never sit in water, but the top of the bed dries out quickly, and a Fonthill bed without mulch is thirsty by July. That's the job mulch does best: slowing evaporation and keeping roots cool. So on a bare Fonthill bed we lay the full 3 inches, the top of our range and well inside the 2 to 4 that arborists recommend. Where there's still mulch in the bed, we go thinner.
Pelham's trees
Pelham doesn't have a private tree by-law. Instead, residents can nominate a Heritage Tree or a Significant Community Tree: native or rare, roughly 70 to 100 years old, or 50 cm across at chest height. Once designated, a tree is protected under the Niagara Region Woodland Conservation By-law. Plenty of Fonthill's older streets have trees that size.
Designated or not, we treat big trees the same way. Mulch stays 8 to 10 inches back from a mature trunk, which is Penn State Extension's guidance, and new bed edges don't go through large roots.
How we lay a Fonthill bed
- Weeds out. Sandy soil gives up roots easily, so they come out whole.
- Old mulch checked. On free-draining ground it breaks down quickly, so it's often thin rather than too deep. We rake what's left and build on it.
- Edge re-cut between lawn and bed.
- Mulch laid, up to 3 inches on bare beds and to your preference.
- Trunks and siding kept clear.
We finish by sweeping the driveway and walks.
Wood mulch earns its keep on sand
Sandy soil is short of organic matter, and wood mulch adds it as it breaks down. That makes natural pine, classic cedar, hemlock and hardwood especially good choices here, with dyed black, brown and red if you want the colour. Decorative stone lasts, but it heats up in full sun and adds nothing to the soil, so on a sunny Fonthill lot we'd keep it to paths and foundations. Landscape fabric: recommended under stone, usually not under wood, and optional either way.

Why does my Fonthill garden dry out so fast?
Because it's on the Fonthill Kame: sand and gravel that drain quickly. A 3-inch layer of wood mulch on a bare bed slows evaporation and keeps roots cooler, which is exactly what that soil needs.

I have a very old tree. Anything to worry about?
Only that mulch shouldn't be piled against it. We keep a clear ring 8 to 10 inches wide around a mature trunk, and we don't cut bed edges through big roots. If it's the kind of tree Pelham designates as a Heritage or Significant Community Tree, it may already be legally protected.
Do you deliver bulk mulch?
