A mulch job is mostly prep
Anyone can tip mulch into a bed. What makes it last is the order things happen in:
- Weeds out by the root, not buried under fresh mulch where they get a head start.
- Old mulch checked, then thinned or cleared. Arborists warn against stacking new mulch on old every spring for the colour. It builds up into a depth that starves roots of air.
- The edge re-cut, so the line between lawn and bed is crisp and the mulch stays where it belongs.
- 2 to 3 inches laid, thinner if there is still good mulch in the bed. The International Society of Arboriculture recommends 2 to 4, and less on wet ground, so we sit on the careful side.
- Pulled back from trunks and siding. Mulch should never touch a tree trunk or the wood around doors and windows.
Then the driveway gets swept. Nothing is left in a pile for you to finish.
What we lay
Wood mulch holds moisture, evens out soil temperature and slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down, which is why most arborists prefer it. In natural colours: pine, classic cedar, hemlock and decorative hardwood. Dyed: black, premium black, coffee brown and premium red.
Decorative stone doesn't break down, so it rarely needs topping up. It doesn't feed the soil either, and in full sun it runs hot, so it suits the places where nothing much grows: foundations, side paths, around downspouts. The range: river rock, pea stone and pea gravel, white marble, ebony black granite, pink quartz, red crushed brick and Smokey Sunset.
Landscape fabric is optional. We recommend it under stone. Under wood mulch in a bed you'll keep for years, it usually backfires: the mulch breaks down on top of it, weeds root into that, and plant roots grow through it. If you want it anyway, we'll lay it. We'll just tell you first.
Same job, seven different towns
The steps don't change from town to town. The ground and the local rules do, and they change how we do the job:
- St. Catharines: the City's own instruction for its boulevard trees is "do not mound the mulch towards the trunk like a pyramid", and stone on the boulevard needs City approval.
- Niagara-on-the-Lake: sandy loam and dry summers, so mulch is mostly about moisture. Old Town heritage guidance leans to natural stone and gravel.
- Thorold: our home town, with clay soils above the escarpment.
- Niagara Falls: the clay plain, so the thinner end of the range. The City's Tree By-law bars piling stone or soil over the roots of public trees.
- Welland: heavy clay that drains slowly. The City recommends a topping of mulch around its boulevard trees.
- Fonthill: the sand and gravel of the Fonthill Kame, which drains fast, so mulch earns its keep here more than anywhere.
- Jordan: Lincoln's tree by-law is the strictest of the seven, so edging near big trees is careful work.

Do you just deliver mulch, or install it too?
We install it. Every job is supplied, bed-prepped and laid by our crew. If all you want is a load in the driveway, a landscape supply yard is the cheaper way to get that, and we'd rather say so than sell you something you didn't ask for.
How deep do you lay it?
2 to 3 inches, thinner where there is still good mulch in the bed, and to your preference. Arborists recommend 2 to 4 inches and no more, and thinner on wet ground, so deeper is never better.
How much mulch do I need?
One cubic yard covers about 162 square feet at 2 inches, or 108 at 3. The formula is square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. We work it out when we quote, so you aren't paying for leftovers.
How often should mulch be replaced?
Not on a calendar. Top it up when the layer gets thin, and rake it over when it mats down. A fresh layer over the old one every spring is the most common way beds end up too deep.
What does mulch installation cost?
We quote each job rather than publish a price list, because three things move the number: the area of the beds, the mulch or stone you choose, and how much prep the beds need first. Send the form and you'll have a number within one business day.
Is mulch safe for pets?
The mulch that's genuinely dangerous to dogs is cocoa bean mulch. It contains the same compounds as chocolate, and Poison Control warns it can make dogs seriously ill. We never use it.
