What we actually do in the bed
Most of a good mulch job happens before any mulch comes off the truck.
- Weed it. Out by the root, not buried. Mulch laid over live weeds just gives them a head start.
- Clear what's there. Old mulch that has matted down or built up gets thinned or taken out. Arborists are blunt about this: don't add mulch where there's already enough, because a new layer every spring for colour builds into a depth that suffocates roots. So we check before we pour.
- Re-cut the edge. A clean line between lawn and bed is what makes the finished job look finished, and it keeps the mulch in the bed and out of the grass.
- Lay it at the right depth. We lay 2 to 3 inches. Where there's still some good mulch in the bed, we go thinner so the total stays in that range; on a bare bed, we go to the full 3. Within that, it's your call. That sits inside the 2-to-4-inch range the International Society of Arboriculture and Penn State Extension recommend, and on the careful side of it.
- Pull it back from trunks and siding. Mulch should never touch a tree trunk or the wood around doors and windows. More on the trunk part below, because St. Catharines has an opinion about it.

The City of St. Catharines' own rule: no pyramids
If you have a City tree on your boulevard, the City mulched it when it went in, and its instructions to residents are plain: leave the wood chips in place, don't pile soil or grass clippings on top, and "do not mound the mulch towards the trunk like a pyramid." It's on the City's boulevard trees page.
That pyramid has a name among arborists, the mulch volcano, and it's the most common mulching mistake on any street. Mulch heaped against bark holds moisture where the tree can't take it, starves the trunk of air and invites rot and rodents. Penn State Extension's guidance is to keep mulch 3 to 5 inches back from a young tree and 8 to 10 inches back from a mature one. That's what we do, on the boulevard tree and on every tree in your yard.
Two more St. Catharines boulevard rules we work to. Anything planted on the boulevard stays under one metre, and the City's Boulevard By-law says adding hard surfaces there needs City approval. So wood mulch around a boulevard tree is fine, but decorative stone on the boulevard waits until you have the City's OK.
Wood or stone?
Wood mulch is what most beds want. It holds moisture, keeps soil temperatures even, and breaks down into the soil over time, which is why most horticulturists and arborists prefer it. Natural pine, classic cedar, hemlock and hardwood keep their own colours; dyed black, coffee brown and red give the sharp contrast against a lawn.
Decorative stone stays put. It doesn't break down, so it doesn't need topping up. But it doesn't feed the soil either, and in full sun it gets hot and throws that heat at the plants. We'd put it where nothing much is growing: along the foundation, down a side path, around a downspout. The range runs from river rock and pea stone to white marble, black granite, pink quartz and red crushed brick.
Landscape fabric is optional, and our honest advice depends on what goes on top. Under stone it earns its place. Under wood mulch in a bed you'll keep for years, the research says it tends to backfire. The mulch breaks down on top of it, weeds root into that, plant roots grow into the fabric, and it's a mess to pull out later. If you want it, we'll lay it; we'll just tell you first.
Closer to the lake, or up the hill
St. Catharines isn't one soil. Along the lakeshore, Port Dalhousie and the North End sit on the sands and sandy loams of the old Lake Iroquois plain. Those drain fast, so mulch there is mostly about holding moisture through a dry July. Heavier ground away from the lake holds water longer, and that's where the thinner end of the depth range belongs. We look at the bed before deciding the depth. Do you just deliver mulch, or do you spread it too?
We install it. Every job is supplied, bed-prepped and laid by our crew. If you only want a load dropped in the driveway, a landscape supply yard is the cheaper way to do that, and we'd rather tell you so than sell you something you didn't want.
How deep should mulch be?
We lay 2 to 3 inches, thinner if there's already mulch in the bed and depending on what you prefer. Arborists recommend 2 to 4 inches and no more, and thinner where the soil stays wet, so deeper isn't better.
Can you mulch around the City tree on my boulevard?
Yes, with wood mulch, the way the City asks: a flat ring, pulled back from the trunk, never mounded against it. Decorative stone on the boulevard is a different story. The City's Boulevard By-law says hard surfaces there need City approval, so we'd want to see that first.
What does mulch installation cost?
We quote each job rather than publishing a price list, because three things change the number more than anything else: how many square feet of bed there are, which mulch or stone you choose, and how much prep the beds need first. Send the form with a rough idea of the beds and you'll have a number within one business day.
Is dyed mulch safe for my dog?
The mulch that's genuinely dangerous to dogs is cocoa bean mulch. It contains the same compounds as chocolate, and Poison Control warns it can make dogs seriously ill. None of the mulches we install is cocoa mulch.
When is the best time to mulch?
Spring, once the soil has warmed up and dried out, is the classic time. Fall works too, after the cleanup, when it helps even out the freeze and thaw over winter. We book mulching all season, so whichever you pick, there's no cut-off.
Do I need landscape fabric?
Under stone, usually yes. Under wood mulch, usually no. It breaks down, weeds grow in the mulch on top of it, and roots grow into it. It's your call either way, and it's optional on every job.
