What a spring cleanup in St. Catharines actually is
A fall cleanup is a fixed list. Spring isn't, because every yard comes out of a Niagara winter differently. One property in Port Dalhousie has a lawn matted under the leaves the November wind blew in after the fall cleanup; one in Old Glenridge has beds full of broken stems and a hedge that needs cutting back; one in the North End has thin patches where the snow sat longest. So a spring cleanup here is put together for the property in front of us. It can include leaf and winter-debris cleanup, garden bed cleanup, pruning, overseeding of thin or damaged areas, gutter cleaning, and more — and which of those your yard needs is decided when we look at it, not before.
The overseeding is the part worth knowing about. Thin patches in April are the moment to seed, and it's the same seed we use on our seeding jobs, so a spring cleanup can quietly be the first step of a better lawn.
What a St. Catharines winter leaves behind
St. Catharines sits at about 22% tree canopy by the Region's own measurement, and the City's Urban Forestry Management Plan is designed to push that higher. Trees that drop leaves in November don't stop when the fall cleanup is done, so most yards go into winter with a second, thinner layer that the wind puts into corners, against fences and under the hedge. Under snow, that layer mats. Come April, it's the first thing to come out, because grass under it stays yellow until it does.
How the Region collects in spring. Niagara Region picks up leaf and yard waste weekly, all year, with no bag limit — paper or certified-compostable bags only, at the curb by 7 a.m. Branches and hedge cuttings go on the regular truck for four weeks each spring, tied in bundles under 22.7 kg (the Region publishes the dates each year). There is no rake-it-to-the-curb pickup in St. Catharines. Our haul-away means none of that is your Saturday: the debris, the cut-backs and the bundles leave on our truck. Once the ground has dried out enough to walk on without leaving ruts — in St. Catharines that is usually April, later on the heavier clay around the North End and earlier on the sand nearer the lake. What's the difference between this and a fall cleanup?
Fall is a fixed list on every property: leaves, beds, cut-backs, gutters, haul-away. Spring is built around what winter did to your yard, so it can include debris cleanup, beds, pruning, overseeding and gutters, and we decide which after looking.
Which parts of St. Catharines do you cover?
All of it. Port Dalhousie, the North End, Old Glenridge, Lower Brock, Facer, Western Hill, Glenridge, Merritton, Vansickle, Martindale and everything in between.
Do you take everything away?
Yes. Haul-away is part of every cleanup, so there are no paper bags, no bundles at the curb and nothing waiting for the Region's truck.
Do you spray for weeds or treat anything while you're there?
A cleanup doesn't include spraying or treatments. Feeding the lawn is a separate service, the fertilizer program, and it usually starts right after the cleanup.
Can you overseed the thin patches while you're there?
Yes, and spring is the right time for it. We use the same seed as on our seeding jobs. If the soil isn't warm enough on cleanup day, the seed goes down on a second visit.
