Thorold clay, and why depth matters
A lot of Thorold sits above the escarpment, and the Region's source-protection study notes that clay soils are often found up there. Clay holds water. That's useful in a dry spell and a problem when a bed is buried under too much mulch: the soil stays wet, roots run short of air, and the bed goes sour.
So in Thorold we lean to the thinner side of our 2-to-3-inch range, especially on a bed that already has mulch in it, and we make sure the old layer isn't matted into a crust before anything new goes on. Arborists say to use a thinner layer where soil drains poorly, and that's most of the city.
Five steps, in this order
- Weed. By the root. Burying weeds only delays them.
- Deal with the old mulch. Rake it loose if it's still good; take it out if it has packed down or built up too deep.
- Edge. A fresh cut line where the bed meets the lawn.
- Lay it. 2 to 3 inches, to your preference and what's already there.
- Clear the trunks and siding. A ring of open ground around every tree, and nothing piled against the house.
Then we sweep up. Nothing is left in a heap for you to finish on Saturday.
The City's street trees, and yours
If there's a City tree out front, we leave the tree itself alone and mulch around it flat, pulled back from the bark, with nothing mounded against the trunk.
The same goes for your own trees. Penn State Extension's guidance is 3 to 5 inches of clear space around a young trunk and 8 to 10 around a mature one. A mulch volcano heaped against the bark is the one thing we'll talk you out of.
The City is also planting more: its Trees for All partnership with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority lets landowners put their name forward for plantings on private land. A new tree is exactly where a proper mulch ring pays off.
Wood or stone for a Thorold yard
Wood mulch for planted beds. It loosens heavy soil a little as it breaks down, and it keeps roots cooler. We carry natural pine, cedar, hemlock and hardwood, plus dyed black, brown and red. Decorative stone for the spots that stay bare: along the foundation, by the downspouts, down the side of the house. Landscape fabric under the stone if you like, and usually not under the wood. It's optional either way.

My beds stay soggy. Should I still mulch?
Yes, but thinner. On Thorold clay we'd usually lay the low end of our range and clear out any old mulch that's matted, so the soil can dry between rains. Deep mulch on wet clay is the combination to avoid.
Can you mulch around the City tree out front?
Yes, around it. We leave the tree itself alone and keep a flat, clear ring around the trunk, never a mound.
Do you remove the old mulch?
If it needs it. Good mulch gets raked loose and topped up; matted or too-deep mulch comes out, and we take it away.
What does it cost?

Do you just deliver mulch?
No. We supply and lay it. For a driveway drop, a supply yard is the cheaper option, and we'll happily say so.
