What we build in Niagara Falls
Wood fences — pressure-treated or cedar — for privacy and a finished look. Chain link for a clear boundary or a dog run that costs less and needs nothing from you afterwards. Gates to match either. And if there's a tired fence there now, we take it down and haul it away as part of the job.
We don't build vinyl, aluminum or pool-code enclosures, and if that's your project the first reply will say so.

Niagara Falls fence rules, in plain words
Here is what the bylaw says, so nothing about your quote is a surprise. The City of Niagara Falls Fence By-law (By-law 2005-70) sets, for a residential lot:
- Back yard: up to 2.5 metres — half a metre more than most of Niagara allows.
- Front yard: 1 metre, including the front-yard stretch along a neighbour's side line.
- Corners: nothing over 75 centimetres within 9 metres of an intersection, so drivers can see.
- Pools: a separate bylaw (2014-58) — permit required, enclosure at least 1.07 metres (42 inches).
Permits. The City's own fences page says you do not need a building permit to build a fence unless you're installing a pool or replacing a pool enclosure. It's on niagarafalls.ca; if your lot is unusual, the City's building department is the one to ask, and that's a ruling only they can give.
Locates. Before any post hole, Ontario law requires the buried gas, hydro, water and telecom lines to be marked. We put in the Ontario One Call request; locators have up to five business days, and digging waits until they're done.
Wood or chain link in Niagara Falls?
Depends what the fence is for. Niagara Falls is the one city in our area that lets a back-yard fence go to 2.5 metres, so if privacy is the point, a taller wood fence is on the table here in a way it isn't next door.
Wood is the privacy fence, and at up to 2.5 metres it's a proper screen. More material and labour means more cost. We build in cedar, which costs more and weathers naturally, or pressure-treated, the budget-friendly choice; both want staining or sealing every few years.
Chain link makes sense where height and privacy don't matter, like a dog run or a side boundary. It costs less on materials and labour and needs nothing afterwards, but it won't screen anything.
What sets the price: length of the run, material, height, number of gates, whether an old fence comes out, and what the ground is like where the posts go. We look at all of that in person before we quote.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Niagara Falls?
The City says no — not unless you're installing a pool or replacing a pool enclosure. If yours does need one, we handle it, and we book the Ontario One Call locates either way, so there's nothing for you to chase. The City's page is here.
Is there a limit near a corner?
Yes, and it's lower than the front-yard cap. Within 9 metres of an intersection, Niagara Falls allows 75 centimetres, which keeps sightlines clear for drivers. Everywhere else in the front yard it's 1 metre.
How high can a back-yard fence be in Niagara Falls?
Up to 2.5 metres under the City's bylaw — more than St. Catharines, Thorold or Niagara-on-the-Lake allow. Front yards are capped at 1 metre. We build to the bylaw and tell you what it allows before you decide.
How much does a fence cost in Niagara Falls?

Can you replace the fence around my pool?
No. In Niagara Falls, replacing a pool enclosure needs a building permit under By-law 2014-58 and a fence at least 1.07 metres high, and pool enclosures aren't something we build. For every other fence on the property, we're the call.
My neighbour and I share the line. Who pays?
Between the two of you. If it stalls, Ontario's Line Fences Act sets out a formal process through the municipality, and the City can tell you how it works in Niagara Falls. With back fences allowed up to 2.5 metres here, a shared one can be a bigger job than next door, so it's worth agreeing early. We'll quote either of you, or both.
